Nayokani
Nayokani has always felt like she's being watched. Since her childhood, it feels as though there's a spotlight constantly shining on her, as if everyone is observing her.
Whether this is actually the case doesn't really matter; it's something that has been playing out in her mind since she was a little girl. She doesn't want to be watched; on the contrary, she prefers to hide away in a dark corner, away from the attention. But no matter how hard she tries to escape, the light continues to follow her.
The painting "I Feel Watched" symbolizes this feeling. It depicts a vulnerable, naked version of herself, hiding in her room, by the window where the light keeps finding her. This image, though just a painting, represents her inner struggle. She realizes that paintings are meant to be looked at and seen, and she slowly gives herself permission to stand in the light, to accept that she belongs, just as she is.
I Feel watched 2023
At the beginning of Nayokani's painting journey, she drew much inspiration from online sources, often recreating images in her own unique style. This piece is one such example, featuring a photograph of two people embracing lovingly, originally created by the artist Sethnocentric.
During the early stages of her life as an artist, Nayokani was deeply immersed in the process of creating art, often consumed by thoughts of her next project. This particular painting marked her 50th creation in less than a year and served as a significant milestone in her artistic journey. It was the first piece where she thought to herself, "Wow, I'm capable of creating truly beautiful things."
"Black Love" embodies a profound affection for one another, for the world, for diversity, and for beauty. It serves as a captivating addition to any living space, evoking warmth and love in its viewers.
Black Love 2020
Nayokani, a self-taught artist. Initially drawn to painting during a period of feeling aimless and weary, Nayokani found comfort and purpose in the act of creation.
Painting intuitively, without formal training, Nayokani's work is coming from the heart and mind, exploring themes of freedom, femininity, and diversity. Inspired by images found online, or moments of meditation,
Nayokani's art is a manifestation of personal expression and identity. Creating in a space of comfort and safety, each stroke of the brush is a reflection of Nayokani's inner world. Through vibrant colors and open compositions, Nayokani hopes to convey love and purity in her art, inviting viewers to connect with the essence of her creations.
